AI perspectives: Understanding the AI debate today

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its related technologies are developing fast. It is challenging to keep up with the pace of change and the ethical and societal implications. Moreover, the number of people commenting on AI’s progress creates a confusing and sometimes contradictory backdrop.

Against this context, we wanted to set out how AI has developed to date and understand how it might develop in future. We also wanted to understand what prevents greater adoption and how we might regulate the technology. Finally, what do we need to do to ensure everyone benefits?

Earlier this year, as part of an AI policy fellowship at the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath, we interviewed five leading academics with expertise or interest in AI to get beyond the hype and the doom, and to begin answering these questions.

In the foreword to our report, Lord Tim Clement-Jones, co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on AI, says:

“The insights shared emphasise the necessity for a balanced approach that integrates AI methodologies, proactive adaptation strategies for businesses, and comprehensive regulatory frameworks to guide AI’s ethical deployment.”

He concludes:

“The report serves as both a welcome caution and a guide, aiming to foster a debate about the shape of AI development in a manner that is responsible, and inclusive, ensuring that AI’s adoption by and integration into society is both innovative and beneficial.”
